I previously wrote that if William Henry Cooley (m Sophia Havens) and
James Cooley of Jack County TX were indeed brothers (their descendants'
Y-DNA matches one another and ours) *and* that they were enumerated on the
1810 census for Pennsylvania (as opposed to being missed), they could have
belonged to one of three families:

Jacob Cooley of Luzerne County
Amos Cooley of Lycoming County
A Cooley of Northumberland

I've just noticed that Amos was too young to have been the father of
William. He's out.

Another researcher is descended from a James Cooley (c1802) of PA, m Mary
Sanford. James and his presumed brother, Jacob, went to Canada then to
Michigan. A descendant of James's matches the Benjamin Clan's Y
chromosome. Jacob of Luzerne County appears to have died by 1820. The
researcher believes that he may have been the son of Gideon who died in
Ontario in 1793. After spending a couple of hours looking at the data, I
think he may be onto something.

So, assuming that the 1810 census entries for the Cooleys are complete and
accurate (and they probably are not!), and having sorted out a number of
the families through DNA, and assuming that the speculation about Jacob is
accurate, that leaves "A Cooley" of Northumberland County PA, which is
located just west of the center of the state.

"A." Cooley's household had only two young males, 0-9 and 10-15, which
fits exactly to James and William H. There's one woman of sufficient age
to have been A's wife, and four females who might have been daughters.

I've never had success looking for Cooleys in Northumberland County, but
it seems to be as good a place as any to search for Wm H's and James's
elusive parents.
