Michael,

There is a James Madison 'J.M.' Cooley listed on 1880 census married to
Sallie T. Moore (married in 1874 in Lamar Co., TX). They had two sons,
Oscar Merrill Cooley & Alonza/Alanzo Pratt Cooley. This James Madison
Cooley is listed by family trees with death in 1900. The family trees list
the 1871 California Voters List as this same person (where his birthplace
was listed as S.C.). The 1800 census of this family in TX lists James'
birthplace as Mississippi, 1900 census of older son lists father's
birthplace as N.C. I strongly suspect that this person is the son of Thomas
Jefferson Cooley; especially since he married in Lamar Co., TX where others
of his family first migrated to, and in fact, his Mother died there. More
research is definitely warranted!

Mary C.

This is good. Thanks. I'll edit it down to the form that I use on the "Y"
page.

BTW, everyone. The Hackett descendant joined the Cooley DNA Project. For
now, I've out him in our group so that we can look at the results.
