Hi Bonnie,
Yes my John Cooley was born abt. 1827 in Missouri and was married to Sarah
Ann Treadway (the marriage record is the only document that lists her as
Treadwell - parents are not known). I have never seen John's middle name
listed as William. In fact he has never been seen with a middle initial.
John was in the same area as William Washington Cooley in the 1850s which
made it look like they might be brothers. However the will of Isaac as you
say did not mention John. Michael has my John Cooley in grey on his
patrilineal chart.
As for your question about Philip Sheridan Vance - I believe that they were
cohabitating in 1900 and only married in 1906. In 1910 the two boys seen in
the 1900 household as Vance are listed with the surname Virley. The young
daughter Mary is seen with the Vance surname in 1910. Sarada may have been
the one who was married 7 years in 1900 to her first husband. The 1910 does
show that this was her second marriage.
Best wishes,
Cathy

Cathy, Your reasoning sounds right to me, although I do have one question.
The 1900 Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory says that Sheridan and Sarada
have been md 7 years (md 1893), however you found a marriage on 11 Dec 1906
in Benton County, AR.
Also is your John Cooley the same as John William Cooley who md Sarah Ann
Treadwell and was born abt 1827 in MO? I previously thought he was a son of
Isaac N Cooley, however he (John) is not mentioned in Isaac's will.
I am descended from Jemima Cooley, sister of Timothy Goode Cooley b 1810.

This may be a long shot and I hope that I can explain my reasoning. I know

I have an idea about what happened to Timothy's daughter Malinda Jane Cooley
who was divorced from Noah Mullinex. I think that she left Noah soon after
the 1870 census and may have gone to Parkersburg, West Virginia. This is
where John Cooley and William Washington Cooley were seen having children in
the 1850s. She might have had two children before passing away or moving
on.....
In 1880 my John Cooley has two children in his household who are "adopted."
Their mother's place of birth was Missouri.

I have tried to find these children in later years and believe that Sheridan
was Philip's middle name and not the surname which I think may have been
VANCE as seen in this death record.

Is the surname of the children listed incorrectly on the 1880 census?
According to the death certificate of Philip Sheridan Vance his mother was
Malinda Cooley. The informant was Philip's ex-wife Sarada.
Is it possible that my John COOLEY had a sister, niece or cousin named
Malinda Cooley who married a Mr. Vance and was the mother of the children
"Philip Sheridan" and "Mary A. Sheridan" as seen with John Cooley in 1880?
She may have died before 1880 or left the children with the Cooleys.

I'm writing a blogpost on my John COOLEY for Monday. While going through all
my information I kept checking to see if any new databases have been added
to help with John's story. I believe that there is some importance in the
two children found in his 1880 household as adopted. Could I be on to
something?
Best wishes,
Cathy
