autosomes

We know from 23andme test results that Gloria (a descendant of Perrin
Cooley) and Jack (a descendant of Perrin C Cooley) has a significant
autosomal match. Others have tested in order to find out more about the
match and whether it *really* comes down the Cooley side. Unfortunately,
Jack has yet to reveal his results, so we're unable to conduct the needed
comparisons. (I'm pretty certain that his only hesitation is derived from
being very busy.)

Gloria, her mom, I and my dad have our results uploaded to gedmatch.com I
know that others do also. There's no fee for uploading to this site, which
is recommended because of the excellent tools they have. I propose that we
start a semi-formal autosomal project among the descendants of John Cooley
and suspected allied lines. I'll create a password-protected page where
I'll record our names. GEDMATCH IDs and lineages.

On GEDMATCH it's possible to conduct searches for small matches. The
problem is that even *many* small matches may mean nothing at all. Indeed,
although most of John's descendants may have some fragments of his
autosomal DNA, it's entirely possible that none of us have matching "John
segments." The problem is that the autosomal DNA for any one ancestor
becomes fragmented with each generation--and it fragments differently
(different chunks) down each line. And because we can share as many as 16
ancestors at only the 5th generation, it can be a challenge to determine
with certainty to which ancestor matching results should be assigned.

Nevertheless, the Gloria/Jack match is encouraging, and we may learn
something significant from it.

Any John Cooley descendant--or those who reasonably expect to be descended
(such as Shirley Wilcox), or those who look to be of a collateral line,
such ans the William Henry Cooley descendants--are encouraged to
participate. If you have auDNA results, just upload them to GEDMATCH and
send the username to me. If you haven't tested, I recommend 23andme.com,
although test results from ancestry.com and ftdna.com work.

Happy to answer any questions.
