In the mid-18th century, when William was born, it was uncommon for people
other that the landed gentry and aristocracy to have middle names. But by
the mid-19th century, it was common for Americans to be named for not only
grandparents, but inlaws, friends, prominent community members and, of
course, famous people. James Matthews was living very near the Cooleys at
this time, so it's very possible.
