Hi Brad,
We do believe that John was WMC's family. Apart from the matching DNA, the
timeline at this page pretty much spells it out:

Now, there's nothing that says "William, son of John." That may need to be
a footnote for this lineage forever. But the DNA and genealogical evidence
is overwhelming. They were certainly closely related, if not father and
son.
