I had my mtDNA done years ago, so that was not an issue for me.

My earliest proven Cooley ancestor was John Cooley. He was born ca.
1792-6, in KY and his parents were born in VA, according to the 1880
census of Lake Co., CA. He probably died 30 June 1880.

*_Timeline for John Cooley who married Annis Ann Hardin:_*
*1812 - he enl. in the regular army at_Richmond, Madison Co., KY_. The
only Cooley on the Madison Co., KY tax records in 1812 was William
Cooley (1 m 21+)
*1816 Nov 3 - he m. Annis Ann Harden,_Overton Co., TN_ [this is in his
pension record; why they were m. in TN is a puzzle (did she have
relatives here?); in the 1880 census she says her father was b. VA & her
mother b. TN; her father Electious Hardin left a will probated July 1812
in _Adair Co., KY_]

*1825 ca - daughter Mary Ann born KY
*1826 Oct 15 - daughter Lydia Ann born in KY (date from tombstone; but
1900 census showed her b. Oct. 1831; not likely however since she m. in
1846)
