This Indenture, Made this twelfth day of June in the year of Our Lord One
thousand Seven hundred and ninety three, Between CONSTANTINE LADD espr, high
sheriff of the County of Stokes, in the State of North Carolina, On the One
part, and JAMES MATTHEWS, of the County of Stokes, said County aforesaid of
the Other part: Whereas by Virtue of an Execution Issuing from the County
Court of Stokes, against AUGUSTINE BLACKBURN for the sum of four pound ten
shillings, which sum was recorded by JOHN FAIR, of the Said AUGUSTINE
BLACKBURN as on record may appear; And whereas the said execution was
directed; And delivered to the said CONSTANTINE LADD esqr, high sheriff as
aforesaid, commanding him of the Goods, Chattels, lands and Fermaments of
the said AUGUSTINE BLACKBURN, he should cause to be made the aforesaid sum
of four pounds ten shillings to satisfy the said Execution with the Costs
thereon; And the said CONSTANTINE LADD Sheriff as aforesaid in persuance &
by Virtue of his Office, and the aforesaid execution did seize and take into
his hands & custody (no Goods or Chattels to be found) a Certain piece or
parcel of land, situate lying & being in the Said County of Stokes Bounded
as follows, Beginning at black oak in AMBROSE BLACKBURNs line, Running South
36 Chains & 25 links to a black oak thence West 65 chains to a black oak,
near YOUNGER BLACKBURN line, thence North 36 chains & 25 links to a stake
and thence East to the beginning, Containing two hundred and thirty five
acres and an half, And the said CONSTANTINE LADD Sheriff as aforesaid, after
due Advertisement according to Law, did Cause the said piece or parcel of
land with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging to be put up at public
sale to the highest bidder, on the Seventh day of May in the year of Our
Lord 1792. At which time & place the aforesaid JAMES MATTHEWS became the
last and highest bidder, at the sum of four pounds eleven shillings for the
said Lands with the appurtenances thereunto belonging. This Indenture
therefore witnesseth that the said CONSTANTINE LADD, Sheriff of Stokes
County as aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of four pounds
eleven shillings to him in hand paid by the said JAMES MATTHEWS, at and
before the signing & sealing, the Receipt whereof is thereby Acknowledged,
he the said CONSTANTINE LADD Sheriff, doth hereby, Bargain, Sell, alien,
Enfeoff, Convey, and Confirm unto the said JAMES MATTHEWS his heirs,
Executives, administrators, or assigns forever, all the aforesaid, AUGUSTINE
BLACKBURN, Right, Title, Claim or demand of or into the aforesaid piece or
parcel of land with all the hereditaments, and Emoluments, to the same
belonging or otherwise appertaining; To hold to him the said JAMES MATTHEWS
his heirs, executors, Administrators or assigns forever in as full and ample
a manner as he the said Sheriff is Empowered by Virtue of his Office, And
further the said CONSTANTINE LADD Sheriff doth hereby Command, promise and
Grant to and with the said JAMES MATTHEWS his heirs, executors,
administrators or assigns, shall and may from time to time, need, at all
times hereafter have, hold, occupy, possess an enjoy, the said premises,
With the appurtenances free and clear, of and from all Incumbrances had,
made, done or committed by him the said Sheriff, or by his Order, Means or
procurement, and that One the said CONSTANTINE LADD Sheriff will Warrant and
defend the same to the Said JAMES MATTHEWS, his heirs executors
administrators or assigns to far as his Office of Sheriff will admit, and no
farther. In witness whereof, the said CONSTANTINE LADD, Sheriff of Stokes
County hath hereunto set his hand and seal, the day & year above

Stokes County Sept Term 1793. The execution of the above Deed was duly
proved in Open Court by the Oath of Robert McMurry, and Ordered to be
